On Shore & On Board: Contributions of Gig Harbor's Women to the Commercial Fishing Industry
is a video project that examines the role of women in Gig Harbor's commerical fishing economy.
Puget Sound's commercial fishing industry has been well documented from its inception to today's working fleet.
Popular television documentaries show men at sea, risking their life to provide seafood to markets around the world.
Magazines and books share stories of their adventures and difficulties. But little is documented of the contributions
of the women who stayed on shore while their husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers went to sea. Few are aware of
the women's hardships, including raising children alone and managing the household. Little is recorded of the
women who joined the men at sea and of the women who ran their own boats and businesses. This video project
records the stories of these women. Women interviewed include Lindsey Babich,
Sheila Bujacich,
Laurie Dahl Isacson,
Toni Janovich,
Nancy Jerkovich,
Nancy Hilden Jerkovich,
Pat Jerkovich,
Marie Jurlin,
Pauline Babich Lovrovich,
Debbie Ross,
and Rosemary Ross.
